Being Prepared to wear the sheep costume
I was in the Sydney central business district the other day doing a round of meetings. I had some time between a meeting at one end of town to a meeting at another so I used it as an opportunity to stretch my legs and decided to walk.
I was surprised by the sheer number of people that were handing out leaflets and flyers on the street. Each one was trying hard to get eye contact, engage in some conversation and get their business noticed. It’s not easy!
As I walked on I saw one guy who bucked the trend. People were gravitating to him, they were taking photos and they were curious to take a flyer and to read it. It proved to me that sometime if you want to get noticed you have be a little different and you have to be prepared to embarrass yourself.
Here’s what causes cars to slow down on George Street.
A neat trick to keep cold callers at bay.
I respect cold callers I really do. It’s a somewhat thankless task but the truth is cold calling can be effective so they are not going away any time soon.
The trouble is, if you a very busy business in start up mode or experiencing fast growth cold callers can be a huge distraction.
Chances are you will want them off the phone as fast as you can, but there is always a chance that you may actually need what they are looking to offer you.
If your looking to get the best of both worlds, here is a way that I have developed that seems to work well for me so far.
It’s simple, using google docs you can create a form that captures all the information that you may need one day. The data is captured in a spreadsheet which can then be accessed by anyone who knows about it. We surface ours into our intranet.
You can publish the content to a webpage (like this post) so that next time your get one of those disrupting phone calls, you can simply refer them to your website as per your company policy.
Just to prove how easy this is, here’s our exact form.
